How long do electric guitars and amps usually last before you have to buy a new one?

I have had my electric guitar for 5 years now. Recently it sounded awful and I put new strings on. Well, when i play rock acoustic songs, it sounds fine, but the amp hasn't sounded good here recently. Is it about time to buy a new amp or is 5 years not long enough for amps to start messing up?
I have an ARCHER electric guitar and a JOHNSON amp.
I say it's time to get a new amp. You say yourself the guitar sounds fine when it's acoustic. Acoustic means not using the amp. Yet when you use the amp, that's when it sounds bad. So you definitely need a new amp. 5 years is long enough. I bet if you get a new amp it will sound as good as new.

What is the best store for new & used Electric Guitars in NYC?
Jan 31, 2007 by Dr Dee | Posted in Blues
I'll be in New York City next month and want to pick up a new or secondhand Electric Guitar (Probably Fender Tele or Strat). I'm looking for the best. I hear there are some good stores around 48th Street?
Hi my favourite is Sam Ash at 159 west 48th street between 6th and 7th avenues which is a 5 minute walk from Times Square. They have a huge range of Fenders, you can ask to try any of them out, they'll just plug you into the nearest amp and off you go. There is another store directly across the street also but I can't think of the name (you can't miss it though). I would avoid Guitar Centre in the Village as it's too generic a bit like a Guitar supermarket. Hope you find what you're looking for.
BTW when you say you're looking for the best did you mean best store or best guitar because most guitarists would say that Fender strats and tele's are very far from the best - sorry ;-).
Forgot to say Sam Ash have a website
