Swell Maps

Jackson Albracht — guitarist, vocalist, and primary songwriter for San Antonio’s Cartographers — explains how “Aldon,” a lyrically abstract and musically complex standout track on the band’s self-released untitled debut, started out as an ad lib meant to piss off a friend.

“Originally, I was really singing it just to embarrass Aldon,” Albracht explains at Joey’s between sips of a beer he’s barely old enough to drink. “But I played this pretty cool chord change, and I became infatuated with it.”

That chord change and friend-antagonizing chorus — “Aldon is the coolest guy I’ve ever known/ I wonder if I should ask him what his secret is” — remain on the album version, but the song offers a first-person account of a relationship’s death throes. “Feeling confused, think we should talk/Put on your shoes, circle the block/ I noticed the clouds had started eating the stars/ About the same time that we were falling apart.”

alvarez guitar?

what type of guitar do you guys suggest? i live in a fairly small town with only a few little guitar shops that carry only like 4 or 5 guitars, so its kind of hard for me to try out a bunch of guitars in person.
so i have turned to internet shopping. i have been looking around on musiciansfriend.com, and i found a guitar i like, heres the link: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Alvarez-RD20SC-Regent-Series-Dreadnought-AcousticElectric-Cutaway?sku=518729
what do you guys think of that guitar? i only know a little bit about guitars, i dont really know which brands are good... but i know i dont want a cheeply made one. also i dont want just a generic light yellow guitar. i want one that has more style. like that alvarez one in Natural.
i hope that all that was clear... thanks guys. anything is appreciated.

From what I've heard there not a bad guitar, especially the acoustic. The main thing is what sound and action do you like, that's what really counts, everyone has a preference, have you played this guitar, or are you ordering it without knowing what the brand sounds and feels like, that I don't recommend, especially if it's something that you can't send back. Some one in my family got that Estaban Guitar without asking me, and oh boy what a mess that was, and when I called the guitar shop the clerk said, " don't tell me, it's an Estaban", and I said, "how did you know", and he said, everyone who buys one wants to know what they can do with it to make it playable. !!!!! When Estaban plays it on TV it sounds great, but just try and play it, I think mice could crawl under those strings !!!!!!! One thing I tell all my students it's not the price, it's the action and the sound, I've had very expensive ones and the more moderate priced ones and there's good and bad in both, in fact I bought an guitar for $1, 400, dollars and after a week took it back and got one for half that price, I didn't like the action or the sound, so you can never tell, for me I have to play, feel, and hear a guitar before I buy it, price doesn't matter, it's all in the sound and feel, some that I've liked are Les Paul, Gibson, Taylor, one of the best as for acoustic guitars that I really loved was a Yamaha acoustic electric, I played about five of them and that fifth one had a great sound so I bought it, that was about $250.00, but I got it on sale, just ask, the people at the Guitar Center are great at giving you a deal. The rest of the guitars are all classical brands, so I don't think you would be familiar with them, my number one guitar is a Ramirez, I play and teach classical, (my dream guitar, there made in Spain), I'd love to have one of them !!!!!!

How much should I pay for a USED Alvarez Guitar?

i have a buddy that wants to sell a Alvarez guitar model AF62SC. he says that he will take $400 for. this includes the case. is this a good deal or should i keep looking?

That's a fair deal assuming the guitar is in excellent condition. The rule of thumb is that used stuff should sell for no more than half of the original purchase price, and that guitar sells for $800. If the guitar is old and your friend paid less than $800 then perhaps you might offer less.

You should of course try it and make absolutely sure you like it. It has a cedar top which many people - myself included - find too warm but if you like it then go for it! Good luck.
