Bass 101: Learning The Bassics Part 4 - Are You Slap-Happy?

Introduction:

Alright, so we've covered fingerstyle (Part 1) and pickstyle (Part 3), now we're going to cover slapping techniques, also known as thumbstyle. Slap bass was invented in the late 1960s by Larry Graham of Graham Central Station fame. He started whacking away at the bass when the group he was in lost their drummer, leaving him to serve as the entire rhythm section. His innovation paved the way for artists like Louis Johnson, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Flea, Les Claypool, Robert Trujillo, and many others who have abused their thumbs as well as their prized instruments.

How to Play an Electric Bass - Thumbstyle:

Let's begin with proper positioning of both your guitar and your slapping hand. If you play standing up, adjust your strap so that the strings are just at or above your stomach. It is difficult to slap when your bass is slung too low. This allows your wrist better movement, it will take as much abuse as your thumb and plucking finger will. If you play sitting down, don't worry, you're already halfway there. Your forearm should be more parallel to the strings than it usually is when you play fingerstyle, and your elbow should also be lowered closer to the bridge. There are actually two techniques to master here: slapping, which is done with your thumb, and popping, that can be done with either your index, middle, or ring fingers. Start with slapping the fattest string on your bass because it is easier to do than slapping the top strings. Mute the other strings with your fretting hand so they won't interfere. As with your forearm, try to keep your thumb as parallel to the string as you can. Position your thumb either over the last fret or close to where the neck and body join. Then hammer the side of your thumb down on the low string and let it bounce off, if it is done correctly, you'll be able to hear that whacking, zinging tone of the string hitting against the frets. As with any technique, do it slowly (yet strike it with some force) at first so that you can maintain control of your movement.

can i play 4 string bass guitar if ive been playing viola 2 years?

I mean like if playin the bass guitar is same as pizzacotto on a viola. If not how much practice would i need and stuff. Im planning on playing bass in a band and Im wondering if i need more skills then just standing there and plucking the minor notes and the same ones the guitarists makes.

Of course you can play the fretless bass!

It just takes time and practice, like any instrument. The good news is that some of the skills you've learnt are transferable - to an extent - onto the fretless bass. I played acoustic and electric guitar for two years then picked up bass and I developed VERY quickly by comparison. This is going back 10 years or so. Bear in mind also the musical knowledge you've gained from one instrument means learning new concepts on another instrument become much easier too.

This isn't to say you'll become the next Jaco overnight, but through the beginning stages you're more likely to make quicker progress than usual.

I've taught many people both guitar and bass, and the ones who are really good at one instrument (in the case of two high school girls, one on violin and the other piano, both instrument grade 8) made very impressive progress.

Can you convert a 4 string bass guitar to a 5 string?

My husband has a 4 string and wants a 5. I don't see why you can't just add a string instead of spending hundreds of more dollars this soon after Christmas.

YEP

And how do I know? I did it myself. You didn't mention what kind of instrument your husband has, but mine is a Fender Precision Bass clone.

Briefly, you add one tuner on the "bottom" side of the headstock, see ads for Fender Squire basses for exact location. You can buy single Fender style tuners on Ebay.

You replace the nut with a new one, only cut for 5 strings. You better get the 1st and 5th strings as close to the ends as you can, lol.

You buy a special 4 to 5 string conversion bridge from Allparts. Local dealers can get it and I've seen it on Ebay.

And you can buy single wound strings from Musiciansfriend. Either a low B or a high B depending on what you want.

Finally, bear in mind that the finished product will have strings closer together than any store bought bass I've seen, it will take some getting used to, but then again we did that when we first played bass to begin with didn't we? I've been playing mine almost 2 years now and don't know if I could go back to a 4 string now.

GOOD LUCK!
