I am currently playing on a 4 string bass for 5 months and my dad said in a year he will either buy me a 4 string gibson or a 6 string bass. Which should i play? Is it hard to switch?
The only differnce will be mostly in the right hand since the strings are slightly closer. Their is no adjustment whatsoever besides what I have explained.
The 6-string will gives you more versatility due to the 2 extra strings although, 5-strings are more popular due to the fact that they have the added B string on the bass side for more depth. I would suggest a 5-string but, its your choice.

What are some good songs using a 6 string bass?

I just got a six string and i only know one song utilizing the high C. I need some more songs. I have been playing for 6 years so the difficulty dosent really matter, i just need some more.
Les Claypool played a six string on his album Sailing the Seas of Cheese,
Jerry Was a Race Car Driver is played on a six string.
Stu Hamm uses one for most of his stuff...
Same for John Pattitucci on a lot of his solo stuff.
Most guys use six string basses so they can play faster by not having to go up the neck so much to hit those higher registers.
By having that extra string they simply go there as opposed to climbing up the neck on the g string.
Other than that its usually just a show-pony type of thing.
