The 900 block of East 17th Street could be known for music as much as fresh produce and seafood, if Tom Kusian has his way.

Kusian, of Tucson Food Service, the 17th Street Market and Tucson Party Rentals, has partnered with marketing and public-relations man Jim Stanley to open Studio on 17th, at 960 E. 17th St.

The city's latest commercial recording studio is down the street from the rest of Kusian's enterprises in a warehouse area near the Union Pacific tracks just southeast of downtown.

Kusian and Stanley are both musicians. Stanley graduated from Rincon High School in 1967, Kusian from Salpointe, class of 1969. Kusian says Stanley was something of a neighborhood guitar hero when they were growing up. Stanley still plays out, playing acoustic upright bass with the bluegrass band String Figures or electric bass with some other assemblages of Tucson's better rock and roots players.

Kusian was already dabbling in the business end of music before the studio opened this month, with a CD and musical-instrument store inside the 17th Street Market. He'd also started his own record label, 17th Street Records, and a distribution deal with City Hall Records.
