Granite Hills Ends Year With Musical Magic
Magical — that is what members of the Granite Hills High School’s Choral and Music Department created Friday night at the Frank “Buck” Shaffer Theatre inside the Porterville Memorial Auditorium when they presented “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.”
With a cast of 45 choir members wearing an array of costumes, the performance was more of a full production than a concert — and one that took the audience on a magical, and comical, journey filled with laughter, songs, dance, plenty of slapstick comedy.
Featuring the music from “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Wicked,” the concert opened with the cast dancing across the stage, as zombies, to Rod Temperton’s “Thriller.”
As the number ended, apparently so did the life of one performer and thus begin the journey for the search of his killer as the choir moved from number to number.
With Jacob Mahurien as the Phantom, soloist Mai Lor’s angelic voice sang “Think of Me” prior to the men’s ensemble breaking out into a robotic dance and song to Vic Mizzy’s “The Adams Family.”
