The story of Joe Negri's recording career is almost as good as his playing. For decades, touring musicians who visited Pittsburgh and jammed with Mr. Negri at clubs, colleges and the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild knew of his talent. The broader public got just a taste whenever Handyman Negri broke out his guitar on "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood."

It wasn't until 1998 -- when he had already hit 70 -- that he released his first real jazz CD, "Afternoon in Rio," for the MCG label. Two more disks followed, including "Guitars for Christmas" and the outstanding "Uptown Elegance" in 2004.

Now Mr. Negri is back with a fourth CD to document his world-class abilities. His immaculate technique seems untouched by age as he quietly swings through this straight-ahead trio session.

The other side of the plectrum from the elaborately arranged, cast-of-thousands "Uptown Elegance," "Dream Dancing" makes its stripped-down case. Mr. Negri, bassist Brian Stahurski and drummer Thomas Wendt perform mostly lesser-known Great American Songbook tunes, including the gorgeous title track by Cole Porter, "The Girl Next Door" (originally Judy Garland's "The Boy Next Door") and English bandleader Ray Noble's "The Touch of Your Lips." Other highlights include a bossa nova/swing version of "You've Changed" and Negri's new melody over Jerome Kern's "All the Things You Are," here called "You Are All."
