When Elvin Bishop's 'Red Dog Speaks,' His Guitar Sings Gospel
Elvin Bishop loves his cherry red '59 Gibson Stereo ES 345 guitar so much that he named his forthcoming album 'Red Dog Speaks' (out June 15 from Delta Groove Music) after it.
His love for Red Dog shows its spiritual side on the instrumental track "His Eye Is On The Sparrow." The slide is the soaring lead voice, while horn players Ed Earley and Terry Hanck harmonize. "I really felt that one, " Bishop says.
The song, written in 1905, has been performed by gospel legends such as Shirley Caesar, Mahalia Jackson and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, but Elvin took his inspiration from the version by The Harmonizing Four, a top gospel group from the 1950s. "My voice is ok, I get my story across, but it's pretty limited. I've always loved the great gospel singers with the high beautiful voices and the great vibrato - that is what I try to do with my slide."
Fans of Bishop's Grammy-nominated 2008 CD "The Blues Rolls On" and his 1976 smash hit "Fooled Around and Fell In Love, " still

What is the best way to care for a vintage guitar?
Sep 05, 6290 by Trevor | Posted in Hobbies & Crafts
I was recently given a Gibson ES-125 and would love to keep it around for a while. Should I keep the strings on? Keep it dry or humid? What else needs to be done to maintain it?
If stored in its case I would loosen the strings a bit that way before you play it will be easier to clean any dust that is located around the pickups.
I do not know about this model but my DH has several guitars one of which is his grandfathers. On the wooden bodies he will periodically dust and wax it with bowling alley wax. Additionally too much humidity could possibly warp something which is not good but too dry can dry out the wood, you really want a happy medium. But dry is easier to counteract by inspecting your instrument and using an appropriate wood moisturizer or wax more often.

What size frets were on Gibson hollowbody's in the early 1950's?
Mar 03, 2010 by Joshua | Posted in Jazz
I know Les Paul's always have what they call "medium jumbo", but I don't know if Gibson used a smaller fret size similar to what Fenders used on their guitars in the 50's. I've never been able to see or feel a real Gibson ES-150 or a vintage L-5. I think the newer L-5 models and ES-175 have frets similar to a current Les Paul.
not "all" Les Paul's used large frets,
the original Les Paul Customs of the '60's were called the "Fretless Wonder" because the frets were "shaved" so low to the fretboard,
Gibson used to vary the fret, depending on the guitar.
